Nemanja Vidic believes playing less would have a positive effect on the Englishman’s confidence.

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has come under heavy criticism for his poor performances this season. Most observers believe the England international has failed to live up to his £80 million while he is reported to have a central role in the United’s dressing room chaos.

As the Red Devils desperately try to get back into the race for a top-four finish, former United star Nemanja Vidic believes it’s time for Ralf Rangnick to drop Maguire from his regular starting lineup.

‘Play him in easier games’

“Every player has a problem with form at some time in his career,” he told The Athletic.

“I did and it’s clear that Maguire is not at his best this season. I think you can do a few things and one of them is not to play every match as you try to find form again and get confidence.”

United suffered a 1-0 defeat against Everton, which seriously dented their chances of closing the gap with the fourth-placed Tottenham. Anthony Gordon scored the Toffees winner with the aid of Maguire’s body, which deflected his shot.

Vidic added: “A coach could play him in easier games. Not that there are many in the Premier League, and take him out for harder matches. The player needs to feel powerful and strong on the pitch again, not as it is now where he feels that it’s not happening for him.

“It’s difficult to play well when you’re under so much pressure because people are waiting for you to make a mistake.”

United will continue their league campaign with a game against Norwich City next week. The Canaries beat Burnley 2-0 last week, registering their first league game since January 21st. Let’s see if they can upset Maguire and co at Old Trafford on Saturday.
