Former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood believes Manchester United are out of their depth in regards to chasing world-class players like Harry Kane.
Edinson Cavani may reportedly be on his way, but Manchester United’s activity in the summer transfer window has been a disaster.
Just one signing in Donny van de Beek has been made, with the Red Devils spending the bulk of their efforts on bringing Jadon Sancho to Old Trafford. But the winger’s club, Borussia Dortmund, don’t plan to sell.
With the transfer window to close on Monday night, things have never looked so desperate at Old Trafford. Especially in light of a humbling 6-1 home defeat to Tottenham on Sunday.
But while club icons like Wayne Rooney, for instance, have urged United to sign a proven goalscoring talent in Kane, Sherwood believes the fallen English giants stand no chance whatsoever.
Speaking on the Premier League Productions, the ex-Spurs coach said: “We’ve listened to Man United fans, and quite rightly so, saying they need signings and they need this player and that player.
“You don’t need any players to beat Tottenham. You don’t need any players to beat Crystal Palace. You don’t need any players to beat Brighton.
“But, you need a team that has an idea, and an identity of how to play in possession and out of possession.
“At the moment, they’re relying on world-class players – which they have in abundance – like last week at Brighton with [Marcus] Rashford breaking away and scoring that magnificent goal.
“You need a plan. Against evenly-matched teams like Tottenham, you need a plan.
“Yes, everyone wants them to go and make signings, Man United fans want them to sign the best players in the world.
“They’re not in that market anymore, because that No.10 for Tottenham – if United were in that market, he’d be wearing a Man United shirt.
“Harry Kane would be wearing a Man United shirt if they were in that market anymore, unfortunately, they’re not there. They’re not at that table anymore.
“They need to get the best out of what they’ve got, and they’re not making the best out of it.”
