If Jurgen Klopp was ever to leave Liverpool, who would replace him? Danny Murphy thinks he has the answer.

Former Liverpool star Danny Murphy has described Roberto De Zerbi as the ‘perfect’ manager to replace Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.

Murphy reckons De Zerbi, the current Brighton coach, is the real deal. The 44-year-old only joined the Premier League last season. Yet, he has made a great start, with Brighton set to compete in the Europa League after a sixth-place finish in 2022/23.

The Seagulls have carried on where they off this term, with De Zerbi’s style of play earning widespread praise.

“I’ve got the answer, so I’m not worried about [Klopp going],’ Murphy said on talkSPORT.

“De Zerbi is perfect [to replace Klopp]. He’ll be ready then [when Klopp’s contract ends in 2026]

“I think he plays great football, he looks a strong character, he’s learning his trade in this league with Brighton and doing it superbly well. I don’t see a better candidate.”

“I think he is the real deal,” Murphy added of De Zerbi.

‘There is something about him. After meeting him as well, he’s got real gravitas. A real presence. And I love the way his teams play.”

Regardless, Murphy stressed that he doubts Klopp will leave Liverpool any time soon.

The 56-year-old German has a contract at Anfield until 2026. He has also welcomed a string of new players to his squad this summer, making a departure even more unlikely.

Liverpool, who have three wins in four Premier League games this season, return to action on Saturday. They’ll play Wolves at Molineux.
