Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf believes there is still one job left Jose Mourinho wants in his managerial career.

Jose Mourinho wishes to coach the Portugal national team, according to Frank Leboeuf.

Mourinho is a free agent after his dismissal from Italian team AS Roma on Tuesday. Speculation is already rife over his next destination, with reports linking him with a move to Saudi Arabia and a return to the Premier League.

“I remember interviewing Mr. Mourinho when he was at [Real] Madrid or Chelsea when he came over to Los Angeles,” ex-Chelsea star Leboeuf said on ESPN.

“He admitted that the last thing he would love to do in his coaching career would be to get the Portuguese national team job. I think that’s going to be his goal.”

Earlier this month, Mourinho revealed he rejected an offer to replace Fernando Santos as the Portugal manager after the 2022 World Cup.

Roberto Martinez, who previously coached Belgium until the end of the 2022 World Cup, took the job instead in January 2023.

“It’s tricky right now with Roberto,” Leboeuf admitted.

“But I think he can be patient and see how it goes during Euro 2024 and then maybe jump into the seat if he has the chance to.”

Martinez is under contract with Portugal until the end of the 2026 World Cup in North America. The Spaniard has won all 10 of his games in charge of the national team so far.
