Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s lack of goals has been a source of concern for Arsenal, but Kevin Campbell has defended the skipper.

Last weekend’s 1-0 defeat to Leicester City extended Aubameyang’s goal drought to five Premier League games – the worst run of his Arsenal career.

The 31-year-old’s underwhelming performances have coincided with a downturn in form for the Gunners, with three defeats in their last four league matches to leave them outside the top-10 in the standings.

But Campbell insists Aubameyang is not responsible for Arsenal’s struggles as they’ve struggled to reach their full potential lately.

“Arsenal aren’t performing at the moment, but that’s not Aubameyang’s fault,” the former striker told the Daily Star.

“When Arsenal are doing well, then Aubameyang plays well.

“If the team is below par, it’s very difficult for one player to turn it around and change the whole team’s performance level.

“Aubameyang can’t do that, he relies on other players around him.

“Everyone must understand that [Mikel] Arteta is learning on the job so he will make mistakes – that’s for sure.

“I think the team he picked to face Leicester was a good side and they were strong enough to win the game. I just don’t think Arsenal are playing to their full potential right now.”

Arsenal will face Manchester United at Old Trafford in their latest Premier League match on Sunday.
