The Toffees, reduced to 10 men in the final quarter of an hour or so, were handed their first defeat of the season by an inspired Saints.

Everton’s form did not matter much in their trip to St. Mary’s Stadium as they were found on the wrong end of the 2-0 scoreline after the full-time whistle against Southampton.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men found themselves trailing even before the first half an hour. James Ward-Prowse, on being released by Danny Ings, darted into the area and sent a powerful shot into the Everton net.

Not even ten minutes had elapsed after the first goal when the home side conceded another. Ings yet again was involved in the build-up as his cross was poked in by Che Adams.

The second half was relatively uneventful. Instead of pushing for a comeback, Everton further worsened as they were reduced to ten men following the dismissal of Lucas Digne.
