The widely condemned European Super League has revamped its plans for a breakaway tournament after a court ruling.

The backer of the European Super League, A22 Sports, presented new proposals for a revised Champions League on Thursday.

A22 Sports’ revamped plans come after the European Court of Justice ruled in its favor. The European Union’s highest court deemed UEFA and FIFA’s rules against teams joining new competitions as ‘illegal’. It condemned the football governing bodies, accusing them of ‘abusing their position’.

Both UEFA and FIFA previously threatened to penalize clubs that would join the European Super League.

The breakaway league may eventually replace UEFA’s premier club competition in men’s and women’s football, the Champions League.

Now, in light of this ruling, A22 Sports has released the following plans below for its revamped version of the ESL.

The Men’s Competition

  • 64 clubs across three leagues: Star, Gold, and Blue
  • Star and Gold Leagues have 16 clubs each, while the Blue League has 32 clubs
  • Clubs play in groups of eight, home and away, resulting in a minimum of 14 matches per year
  • Knockout stage of eight clubs at the end of the season to determine league champions
  • Annual promotion and relegation between the three leagues based on domestic league performance
  • No increase in match calendar days beyond existing cross-border competitions
  • Matches played midweek without interfering with domestic league schedules

The Women’s Competition

  • Two divisions: Star and Gold Leagues, each with 16 clubs
  • Clubs play in groups of eight, home and away, with a minimum of 14 matches per year
  • Knockout stage of eight clubs at the end of the season to determine league champions
  • Annual promotion and relegation between the two leagues based on domestic league performance
  • Matches played midweek, without interfering with the domestic league calendar
