The England international made just eight starts in the 2022/23 Premier League season.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is happy to have Harry Maguire, but he admits the defender has a decision to make over his future.

Despite retaining the captain’s armband under Ten Hag, Maguire has struggled for game time under the Dutchman, making just 16 Premier League appearances this season – eight as a starter.

“Let’s say I’m happy he’s here and when we needed him he did his job. But it’s also a decision he has to make,” Ten Hag told The Times about Maguire’s future.

In August 2019, Maguire became the world’s most expensive defender when United forked out an £80 million fee to sign him from Leicester City. He became the club’s captain just five months later.

This past season, though, has seen the 30-year-old slip behind Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, and Victor Lindelof in the Old Trafford pecking order. Even Luke Shaw, a left-back, has been favored in central defense.

“No one would be happy with this situation. He is not as well,” Ten Hag added.

That said, Ten Hag mentioned Maguire continues to give his all in training and has played a key role at the club as captain, but won’t settle for a spot on the bench much longer.
