Gareth Southgate has confirmed that England striker Harry Kane will return to Bayern Munich to continue his recovery from an ankle injury, ruling him out of the upcoming match against Belgium at Wembley on Tuesday.
Kane, who sustained the injury during Bayern’s recent 5-2 victory over Darmstadt, joined the England squad ahead of the friendly against Brazil but remained sidelined during the match.
“He’s going back, he won’t be fit for Tuesday,” Southgate announced at a news conference.
In Kane’s absence, England suffered a defeat against Brazil, with 17-year-old Endrick scoring the winning goal, marking his first international goal. Despite the loss, Southgate expressed satisfaction with the performance, particularly highlighting the promising individual performances of players with limited international experience.
“We clearly don’t like losing, but I thought there were lots of very good individual performances from players who have hardly played for England,” Southgate commented.
The match saw Brazil fielding 11 uncapped players, with Southgate acknowledging the quality of the opposition and emphasizing the fine margins in elite-level football.
“It was a really even game and if it had finished as a draw that would have been a completely fair result. There were a couple of small mistakes and that decided the game,” Southgate reflected.
