The Three Lions making it to the final is undoubtedly a result of collective effort, but one player has really stood out.
Raheem Sterling has been backed to win the Euro 2020 Player of the Tournament award by England and Manchester City teammate John Stones.
Sterling has started in all of England’s six games in the tournament so far, scoring three goals and supplying an assist in the process.
His goals have also been quite decisive, with the winger providing match-winners against Croatia and the Czech Republic as well as the opener against Germany. Furthermore, England’s winning goal against Denmark in the semi-finals came from the spot, and it was he who won that penalty.
All in all, the 26-year-old has been a driving force behind the Three Lions’ impressive run this summer, and Stones maintains he deserves to be recognized.
“I’d love to see him get player of the tournament,” the England & Man City defender told reporters of Sterling, via Football Daily.
“What he’s done for us and the unselfish part of his game goes unspoken about, but as players we see it. He’s been a great threat going forward with how direct he’s been in the games and it has been great playing with him.
“I’m sure he will be giving everything on Sunday [in the final against Italy], being that direct, and hopefully get another goal and see where it takes us.
“I couldn’t be happier for him, he’s gone through some difficult times personally. You can see it’s motivated him and he’s come out the other end a better player. That’s what top players do.”
