The Three Lions will have to play their opening UEFA Nations League match without a few key players.
Gareth Southgate has confirmed at least three England players will miss their side’s upcoming match against Hungary.
The Three Lions will play their first match in the 2022 UEFA Nations League on Saturday. It’s already a must-win match as Southgate’s side must face Germany and Italy as their next opponents.
However, England will go into the game without Marc Guehi, Fikayo Tomori and Phil Foden. Raheem Sterling is also a doubt for the game due to being ill.
“Fikayo and Mark both arrived with injuries, but they are progressing well. They won’t play tomorrow, but there’s a chance they will play against Germany.
“Foden, unfortunately, tested positive for Covid, so he had to leave. Hopefully, he will be able to meet up when we get back from Germany.”
He added: “Raheem has also missed a couple of training sessions with a bit of an illness. We’ll assess whether we’ll involve him tomorrow.”
FIFA has forced Hungary to hold the game behind closed doors after their fans’ racist chants during the Euro 2020. According to UEFA’s rules, only one can attend the game for every ten children that enter the stadium.
Southgate added: “We’ve shown how we feel about these issues, in terms of racism and it’s unacceptability. Hopefully the young people in the stadium will recognise why this opportunity has happened and, in some ways, maybe this will be part of the education for the next generation.
“Each generation that passes will bring more tolerance, and we have the same situation in our country, so we’ve got to keep setting the right example. All being well, the young people will enjoy the game and take a bigger message from it.”
Following their match against Hungary, England must prepare to face Germany in their next Nations League clash.
