The Chelsea defender will miss the upcoming tournament with an injury.

Reece James has confirmed his hopes of joining the England squad for the World Cup are over.

The right-back suffered a knee injury in October, starting a race against time to return ahead of the tournament.

Gareth Southgate will most likely announce his World Cup squad on Thursday. But James is sure he won’t be able to travel with the team.

“Devastated,” James posted on social media.

“The minute I injured my knee, I knew the turnaround to make the World Cup would be tight, but I always felt it was possible.

“I’ve worked harder than I ever thought I could to give myself the best chance of going and truly believed I could help the team.

“I appreciate there was risk on both sides but it was one I was willing to take.

“Good luck to the boys. I’ll be back soon. Stay safe and sending love.”

James’ absence adds to England’s defensive issues ahead of the World Cup.

Ben Chilwell will miss the World Cup with an injury, while Kyle Walker is also a doubt. Meanwhile, the likes of Harry Maguire and Eric Dier have failed to regain their best forms ahead of the tournament.
