The Chelsea defender will not be a part of England’s squad for the tournament.

Ben Chilwell has admitted his recent hamstring injury has ruined his “dream” of representing England in the World Cup.

The right-back had to leave the pitch in the final stages of Chelsea’s Champions League win over Dinamo Zagreb earlier this week.

On Saturday, Chelsea confirmed the right-back misses the tournament with a “significant” injury. A scan has revealed the 25-year-old needs to stay out of action for around three months to fully recover.

“Following my ACL injury I worked so hard to make sure I was ready for the World Cup,” Chilwell wrote in a Twitter post.

“It has always been a dream of mine. Unfortunately, this won’t be possible following my scan results. I’ll do all I can to get back playing for Chelsea ASAP. Thanks for the messages of support.”

Chilwell’s absence will be another blow to England’s squad, who are already dealing with form and fitness issues in their backline.

Kyle Walker and Reece James are both racing against time to recover ahead of the tournament, while Harry Maguire is struggling to regain his best form.

The Three Lions will play their first World Cup 2022 match against Iran on November 21. They will then lock horns with USA and Wales in their next group-stage clashes.
