The Manchester City midfielder withdrew from the England squad as he prepares for shoulder surgery.
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has replaced Kalvin Phillips in the England team for the upcoming UEFA Nations League games.
The 32-year-old missed out on Gareth Southgate’s initial 28-man squad after sustaining an injury in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Newcastle last month. He has, though, recovered early.
Henderson has now joined England as a replacement for Phillips, who will undergo shoulder surgery. The Manchester City star is in a race to recover in time for the 2022 World Cup, which begins in November.
England will play two Nations League games during this month’s international break. First up is Italy on Friday in Milan. Southgate’s side then play host to Germany next Monday.
The Euro 2020 finalists are winless after four games in Group A3, with only two points to their account to leave them bottom of the standings.
