Let’s take a look at the player ratings from the round of 16 FIFA Women’s World Cup match at Suncorp Stadium.

A 10-woman England side scrapped past Nigeria in a 4-2 penalty shootout victory after a 0-0 draw in their FIFA Women’s World Cup last-16 tie.

Despite England being the pre-match favorites, it was Nigeria that dominated. The Super Falcons had England fighting for dear life. Ashleigh Plumptre twice came close to breaking the deadlock early on. First, she hit the roof of the bar with a monstrous half-volley. Moments later, she forced England keeper Mary Earps into an incredible save.

England, who had a penalty appeal turned down by VAR, tried to get back in the game. Nigeria’s defense, though, was more than up for the challenge. Even the prolific Lauren James had no answer. The Chelsea forward had a frustrating night, with Halimatu Ayinde keeping her quiet. She ended up with a sending-off late in the game when she stamped on Michelle Alozie’s backside.

Nigeria later had a penalty appeal of their own rejected in extra time after Lucy Bronze’s shove on Alozie. With neither side producing goals, the game then went into penalties – which England won 4-2.

The Lionesses will now prepare to face either Colombia or Jamaica in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
