Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy’s brilliant performances for club and country were recognized at the 2021 Ghana Football Awards ceremony.

Edouard Mendy has won the Best African International award at the 2021 Ghana Football Awards ceremony.

The 29-year-old had a superb debut campaign in London in 2020/21. He joined Chelsea from Rennes in a €24 million deal, became the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, came second in the Premier League’s Golden Glove race on 16 clean sheets, and won the Champions League title.

Mendy’s contributions played a vital role in Chelsea’s European success and top-four finish in the Premier League. He also kept a clean sheet in each of his three appearances for the Senegal national team.

Now Mendy has capped off a fine year by winning the Best African International award and took the opportunity to voice his delight in a video message.

“Hi everyone. I’m happy and grateful to receive this award from the Ghana Football Awards,” he said.

“It has been an incredible year for me, and winning the Champions League remains one of the best achievements of my life.

“I thank all Ghanaians and Africans all across the world for the support and the prayers, and I appreciate this recognition as the best African International player.

“And previous to them all, making Africa proud.”

Mendy is set to report back to Chelsea next week to begin pre-season training at Cobham ahead of his second season with the club.
