The Africa champions reached World Cup’s last-16 round with a sensational win over Ecuador.

Senegal defeated Ecuador 2-1 in their World Cup match on Tuesday. A thrilling match saw the Lions of Teranga qualify for the next stage as the Group A runner-ups.

A dramatic win!

Ecuador came into the game knowing they only needed a draw to reach the next round if Netherlands were to beat Qatar.

As expected, Senegal started the game by pushing for an early breakthrough. Ecuador successfully repulsed their opponents’ goalscoring attempts, but Senegal remained in charge of the possession.

The African champions then opened the scoring at the perfect time. Following a foul on Ismaila Sarr, the Watford star converted a penalty to put his side ahead 1-0.

Ecuador started their attempts to clinch the equalizer as soon as the second period started. Following a few missed chances, Moises Caicedo nodded home from close range to make it 1-1 in the 67th minute.

The result meant Ecuador would have leapfrogged Senegal from the second spot. But the African giants managed to bounce back almost immediately.

Following a free-kick from Idrissa Gueye and its poor clearance from Felix Torres, Kalidou Koulibaly latched onto the ball inside the box.

The Chelsea defender then unleashed an unstoppable strike, scoring his first international goal to send Senegal to the next round.

The AFCON champions will face the Group B winners in the next round.

England are currently leading the Group B table. However, Iran still have a chance to qualify as the first team after tonight’s matches.
