‘Drop Sancho, start Ronaldo’ – Ten Hag urged to exploit possible Spurs weakness

CR7 scored four goals in just two Premier League games against Antonio Conte’s squad last season.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s superb heading ability could prove a game-changer for Manchester United if they put balls into the Tottenham box, according to Paul Merson.

It’s been a far-from ideal-start under new Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag for Ronaldo this season, but Wednesday’s match at home to Tottenham could change that if Merson’s opinion is spot on.

“I think Cristiano Ronaldo will play this game,” the former Arsenal and England midfielder told Sportskeeda ahead of the showdown at Old Trafford.

“I only say that because I know that Tottenham will play everybody behind the ball.

“Manchester United will need to put balls into the box, and Ronaldo is the best header of the ball in the world. I’d leave Jadon Sancho out this week and play Ronaldo, [Marcus] Rashford, and Antony up front.”

Ronaldo made his second Premier League start under Ten Hag in Sunday’s 0-0 home draw against Newcastle United.

The United manager has mostly played CR7 off the bench this season due to a lack of fitness. Most of the forward’s game time has come in the Europa League instead, leaving him with a lowly two goals in 12 games across all competitions.
