The Blues icon gave his thoughts on Romelu Lukaku’s goal in the Club World Cup final.
Romelu Lukaku has responded to his Chelsea woes in the best way possible, according to Blues legend Didier Drogba.
Life back at Stamford Bridge hasn’t lived up to its billing. The club spent €115 million to re-sign Lukaku from Inter Milan in the summer, yet things have hardly taken off since then. The striker has struggled to bring his A-game for most of this season.
But in the Club World Cup, he scored in the 1-0 semi-final win over Al-Hilal Riyadh and later headed in a Callum Hudson-Odoi cross for the opening goal of Saturday’s 2-1 triumph against Palmeiras in the final.
“I love this goal! I love this goal!” former Chelsea striker Drogba told The Athletic about Lukaku’s header.
“Romelu gave us the opening, the chance to take the lead in this game, to bring more confidence. It was not an easy team to play against.”
Kai Havertz’s extra-time penalty then sealed the first piece of silverware in Lukaku’s Blues career, as well as the club’s first World Cup title.
Speaking to Sky Italia afterward, Drogba added: “I’m even happier because of all he [Lukaku] has been through the last few weeks.
“He is responding well. The best way to answer is to score goals and to win trophies. That’s what he did.”
Lukaku and Chelsea return to action next Saturday away to Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
