Aston Villa defender Douglas Luiz reacted on social media to the referee’s decision of calling a penalty after his tackle on Pogba.

Douglas Luiz had a rough night against Manchester United. The Brazilian defender tripped Paul Pogba inside the box and the foul was immediately called by the match referee Michael Oliver and confirmed by VAR. Consequently, Douglas had to stand and watch Bruno Fernandes score the winner for Manchester United.

After the match, the controversy arose. Several Villans were annoyed that Oliver didn’t check the situation himself on the VAR monitor. Moreover, Aston Villa’s manager Dean Smith was visibly frustrated as he believes Pogba tripped himself up. Fans on social media also had the topic trending for several hours after the end of the game.

Additionally, Douglas Luiz also shared his views on the decision to the delight of some and the annoyance of others.

“I see this video and I can’t believe that was a penalty. I always root for a football that is more just, but then I stop and watch these types of situations,” said a clearly annoyed Douglas. “If we have VAR to help, let us start using it CORRECTLY. Those mistakes can define the future of football clubs!”

After last night’s defeat, Aston Villa has fallen behind in the European race. However, considering their last season, the Villans are currently exceeding expectations in the Premier League.
