The Royal Blues will meet their arch-rivals for the first time since returning to Bundesliga.

Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzic has expressed his excitement over the return of Germany’s most celebrated derby.

Schalke have returned to Bundesliga after spending the last season in the second-tier. The Royal Blues will travel to Signal Iduna Park to meet Dortmund in their 99th Ruhr derby.

“We’re absolutely delighted. We know what significance the derby carries for our fans and for the region. We’re aware of the responsibility,” Terzic said in Friday’s press conference.

“The derby is the most important match. We know that we need to win the game. But we also want to win the game.”

Dortmund have struggled for consistency since the start of the current season. The Black and Yellows come into the game on the back of a frustrating defeat against Manchester City, which saw Erling Haaland score against his former side.

Schalke, on the other hand, managed to claim their first victory of the new season last week.

A home win over Bochum saw Schalke climb to the 12th spot on the table. However, the club’s sporting director Rouven Schroder has no doubt that the Royal Blues come into the derby as underdogs.

“Our overall performance will be decisive. We need to be confident and brave, and we’re hoping to go home with a positive result,” Schroder said.

“We’ve earned the chance to play the derby after working hard for a whole year. We can’t wait for it now.

“We all know that Dortmund are a Champions League side and they’ve been on an incredible journey. It’s therefore a derby where one side is perhaps a bit stronger than the other, but we’ll gladly take on the challenge.”
