Dortmund sack manager Marco Rose after just one season

The Bundesliga giants have parted company with their coach following an underwhelming first campaign.

Borussia Dortmund have sacked manager Marco Rose after just one season at Signal Iduna Park.

Rose replaced Lucien Favre as head coach last summer upon impressing at Salzburg and Borussia Monchengladbach. Things, however, never really took off at Dortmund. BVB went the 2021/22 campaign trophyless, suffered early exits in all cup competitions, and finished a distant second in the Bundesliga.

The club board has now decided to change coach following a meeting on Thursday.

“Despite a difficult season with many uncertainties, I was convinced by our path. During our discussion, I developed the impression there was no longer a one hundred percent conviction among all those responsible. We therefore ultimately decided together to end the cooperation,” read a statement from Rose.

What was Rose’s record at Dortmund?

In 46 games across all competitions, Rose led the club to 27 wins and 15 defeats. Dortmund scored two goals a game on average under the 45-year-old German tactician and conceded a goal per match.

The highlight was a second-place finish in the Bundesliga this season, albeit eight points behind champions Bayern Munich.

Furthermore, Dortmund suffered a group-stage exit in the Champions League and a shock Europa League playoff knockout round defeat to eventual finalists Rangers.

The defense of their DFB-Pokal title also came to an early end in a last-16 defeat to German second division side St. Pauli.

Rose’s assistant coaches Alexander Zickler and Rene Maric, as well as athletics coach Patrick Eibenberger, will also leave Dortmund.
