Borussia Dortmund’s title aspirations have suffered a huge blow as they suffer a humiliating 5-1 loss against Stuttgart at home.

After today’s unexpected defeat, Dortmund currently holds the sixth position at the Bundesliga table. If Bayern Munich secures a win tonight, Lucien Favre’s side will be left seven points behind the German league’s champions.

Dortmund displayed a disappointing performance at Signal Iduna Park. After an average first half, there were still hopes of securing a win with the match leveled. However, Stuttgart decimated Borussia in the second half, netting the goal three times in ten minutes. The final blow was struck by Nicolas Gonzalez after the 90th-minute mark.

As the match ended, reactions began to surface. Mats Hummels’s strong declarations suggested the manager’s tactics were to blame, with the team being careless in possession.

“We always try to play small and small through narrow spaces and have a huge ball loss rate,” Hummels told Sky Germany. “If it works, it looks like nice football. But it rarely does. That requires too much skill.”

The remarks won’t go down well with Lucien Favre, whose position at the club begins to be questioned. Borussia Dortmund failed to win any of their last third matches in the Bundesliga. The German side’s defense is looking shaky after allowing 13 goals in the last five league matches. Dortmund hasn’t been able to keep a clean sheet since October. Moreover, the Germans are also suffering from the loss of Erling Haaland due to injury.
