Just one day after completing Jadon Sancho’s return, BVB have announced a second loan signing from the Premier League.

Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen has joined Borussia Dortmund on loan until the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

Maatsen is the second Premier League player that Dortmund have signed on loan in January. The other signing was Jadon Sancho, who completed his loan move from Manchester United on Thursday.

“Borussia Dortmund made a lot of effort to sign me,” Maatsen revealed in a club statement.

“I’ve been following BVB and their fans for a long time and even went to the Champions League match in Manchester in the autumn of 2022 to see the team live on the pitch.

“I’m very happy that the loan has now worked out. I promise that I’ll give my all to help the team be successful and am really looking forward to the Yellow Wall.”

Before joining Dortmund, Maatsen signed a new contract at Chelsea until June 2026.

The Dutch left-back joined the Blues from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2018. He has struggled to break in the first-team though, having only made 16 appearances at senior level.

After a successful loan spell at Burnley last season, Maatsen hoped 2023/24 would be his breakout campaign. Yet, the 21-year-old only made 15 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions, three as a starter.

Dortmund return to Bundesliga action on Saturday away to Darmstadt.
