Ex-Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan is pleased with the club’s progress under Diego Simeone and has backed them to challenge for titles.

Diego Forlan believes Atletico Madrid have what it takes to challenge on all fronts this season.

Los Rojiblancos have looked an exciting unit this term and they could well be among the challengers for La Liga.

So far this term, Atletico are the only unbeaten side in La Liga and are only three points off first-place despite having two games in hand.

In the Champions League, they are in second place behind reigning champions Bayern Munich.

Luis Suarez, Lucas Torreira, and Geoffrey Kondogbia all joined the club over the summer while Alvaro Morata and Thomas Partey were the only two major departures. Diego Forlan sees no reason why Atletico shouldn’t challenge for titles on all fronts.

“They’ve kept the team together, there’s great players in every department,” Forlan told MARCA Sport Weekend.

“LaLiga is very even, and we’re seeing how the big teams are dropping points, and in the Champions League Atleti also have a squad up there with the best.”

“They’ve been so close and they could be in the running again.”

Forlan is also excited about the arrival of compatriot Luis Suarez at Atletico and views him as a great signing.

“We’ve benefited from a situation which was a shame for Luis and what he’s given to Barcelona,” he continued.

“We’ve taken advantage of the situation and we have a very good signing.”
