Sergino Dest is determined to make his mark at Barcelona as he looks to become the first American to achieve ‘big things’ at the club.
Sergino Dest took a significant leap in his footballing career in the summer transfer window as he jumped ships from Ajax to FC Barcelona.
An initial fee of €21 million, which could rise by a further €5 million, was required by Barca to secure his services with the teenage defender signing a five-year contract.
The Netherlands-born fullback has become the first-ever American international to wear the colors of the Catalan giants.
The 19-year old’s debut at Camp Nou was not the most memorable one as he witnessed his new side failing to record a win. Nevertheless, the little over a quarter of an hour that he played against Sevilla marked a special moment for him.
“It’s an emotional moment. It was an emotional moment for me when I was on,” Dest told reporters on Monday, as per Sports Illustrated.
“The first couple days I didn’t realize it that much. But when I look back, I’m just like, ‘Wow, I play for Barcelona!’ because everything went so fast the first couple days.
“I want to be the first [American] that actually does something great at this club. So I’ll work really hard for this, and I want to achieve big things at this club.”
