Sergino Dest suggests the language barrier between him and Lionel Messi did not allow the two of them to build a proper connection.
FC Barcelona’s Sergino Dest made his debut on Sunday after completing his reported €21 million transfer from Ajax in the summer transfer window.
It may have been a memorable day for the young fullback to play in the Barca colors for the first time but it most probably is not his sweetest of memories.
The 19-year old could make no impact as he came off the bench to play for about 15 minutes in a match that ended in a 1-1 draw against Sevilla.
He recently spoke about meeting the club’s icon Lionel Messi in the few days he has been at Camp Nou, saying that he still isn’t on the same page with his new teammate due to communication issues.
“Today I saw everyone, Messi too,” Dest told Dutch outlet NOS. “Messi doesn’t speak English, but it was very special to meet him.
“If I’m honest, I don’t know what he told me, but we were both smiling, so everything must be fine, right?”
Bayern Munich were also said to chasing him while he was still at Ajax, but the chance to join Barca was too good to turn down for Dest.
“I chose Barcelona because I have always dreamed of playing for Barca,” he added. “When I found out about Barca’s interest, I didn’t have to think twice.”
