The USMNT star passed on the opportunity to team up with the Champions League holders last year but is without any regrets.

Sergino Dest emerged on the radar of several European heavyweights following his breakthrough season with Ajax in 2019/20.

A product of the club’s youth academy, the fullback earned a promotion to Ajax‘s senior team, made his Eredivisie debut, and started his first Champions League match in consecutive months last year.

Among his many potential suitors were Bayern Munich. However, the 20-year-old decided to ignore the Bavarians’ interest and instead join the team that they conclusively beat 8-2.

FC Barcelona sealed his signature with a €21 million transfer, and Dest suggests playing at Camp Nou had always been his fantasy.

Dest told the Associated Press: “It was not easy, but this is my dream club. So that is why I chose Barca.

“I saw some chances. They had some new players for the team. [Ronald] Koeman wanted me at Barca, so I thought they had a good plan for me. And right now I am playing, so I am happy.

“I had to take it because you never know when the chance happens again.

“I was not nervous at all, it was just that I am ready and happy to play. If I would be nervous, I shouldn’t have come to Barca. For me, it is my time to show what I have got, try to do my best and help the team out.”
