France manager Didier Deschamps has addressed the performance concerns surrounding Arsenal defender William Saliba, indicating that the 23-year-old needs to refine certain aspects of his game before securing a regular starting role for the national team.
Despite making 12 appearances for France, Saliba found himself on the bench during their recent 2-0 defeat to Germany in a friendly match. However, he is anticipated to feature in Tuesday’s friendly against Chile.
In recent games, Dayot Upamecano, Ibrahima Konaté, and Benjamin Pavard have been preferred over Saliba in defense, with all vying for spots in France’s Euro 2024 squad.
“Saliba is having a decent season with Arsenal,” Deschamps stated to reporters. “However, I’ve noticed certain inconsistencies in his performances. His opportunities with the French national team have been limited, and when he has played, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. I understand that the circumstances haven’t always been favorable for him.”
Deschamps acknowledged that Saliba faces stiff competition within the squad, but assured that he will have the chance to prove himself in the upcoming match against Chile.
“Despite his current position in the pecking order, Saliba remains in contention,” Deschamps affirmed. “He will have an opportunity to showcase his abilities on Tuesday.”
