The Premier League’s most expensive player title has already been snatched away from Arsenal’s record signing.
Declan Rice saw the funny side of being the most expensive footballer in Premier League history…for a short while.
A month ago, Arsenal agreed to a £105 million deal with West Ham for Rice. It was a club-record deal that exceeded even the British record of £100 million that Manchester City spent on Jack Grealish in 2021.
But, Chelsea upped the ante by finally prising Caicedo away from Brighton last week, beating off competition from Liverpool to secure a new Premier League transfer record.
“I had it [the record] up on the wall for two weeks! It’s come down already!” Rice joked on Sky Sports.
Despite Caicedo’s horror debut, giving away a late penalty against Rice’s old club West Ham on Sunday, the same couldn’t be said for the latter. Rice was in fine form at Selhurst Park on Monday to help a 10-man Arsenal defeat Crystal Palace 1-0.
“Before the game tonight, I was on the way to the game and I just thought, ‘Just go out there and have it tonight, try and put on a show,'” the England international added.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was full of praise for Rice, saying: “He was fantastic today. He dominated the game. We asked him to do something new and he was fantastic.”
Rice will now prepare for Arsenal’s home match against Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday.
