Kevin De Bruyne explains how Manchester City were a victim of their own wrongdoings in the title race against Liverpool last season.

Manchester City were made to have a taste of their own medicine as they were dethroned as Premier League champions by Liverpool in the previous campaign.

The Reds narrowly missed out on the title against the Sky Blues in 2018/19, ending up runners-up by a mere one-point difference. The former learned from their mistakes and came back much stronger the following season, winning the league by a gargantuan 18-point margin.

Jurgen Klopp’s men deserve all the praise for their groundbreaking success but it cannot be denied that Pep Guardiola’s men were a shadow of their usual selves, which made the road to the league title easier.

The fact that Man City lost more matches and dropped more points in the previous season than in the two before them combined adds some validity to the aforementioned assertion.

To add injury to insult, Arsenal knocked them out of the FA Cup before Olympique Lyon dumped them out of the Champions League.

Inconsistency remained a consistent troubling issuing for Guardiola’s team, and Kevin De Bruyne suggests this should be the primary problem to address in 2020/21.

De Bruyne told the club’s official website: “A lot of the time this year we played good enough, but we didn’t capitalize on their mistakes and we made a few mistakes too many and the other teams got goals out of it and points.

“That’s the difference. I don’t think a lot has changed from the years before, but if you make too many mistakes then you lose too many points.”
