After a flashy debut against Aston Villa, Jesse Lingard got a deep analysis from David Moyes just 48 hours after the game at Villa Park.

When David Moyes decided to take Jesse Lingard on a loan from Manchester United, he honestly didn’t know what to expect. Despite knowing about his skills, the recent problems off-the-pitch were a major concern. Nobody had an explanation of when we could get the best Jesse back to his best form. After last Wednesday’s brace at Villa Park, the player can finally feel like he is slowly going back to his old self.

David Moyes couldn’t be more excited at the prospect of having a world-class winger under his command. As you all know, the Hammers have been consistent this season. They are trying to finish at a decent position that can bring them to play European tournaments next year. With a player like Lingard, Moyes is convinced this objective is very likely if the squad play at the level he expects. All of this starts with Jesse’s contribution as a loanee.

Moyes explains the tactical reason to sign Lingard.

“We signed him because of his link-up play, his control… he gave us a little more confidence on the ball,” said Moyes of the Manchester United loanee via Sky Sports. “I think he helped a lot of players around him improve as well, they were able to find him, get him on the ball. He got himself in a few shooting positions and I think if we can continue to get him into some good attacking positions then hopefully, he can come up with the goods for us and for some goals. We always want to make sure we have got the ability to defend set-pieces – because if you don’t then you’re going to be in trouble. But it wasn’t the reason for signing Tomas Soucek.

“The reason for signing him was he scored the goals and his ability to be a midfield player, although obviously it does help with his stature. But we also have some talented small players as well and we need them to be the creativity. I felt Jesse would give us an extra one. We brought in Said, we brought in Jarrod Bowen, and there’s Pablo Fornals and Manuel Lanzini who are all doing great. I felt we needed to keep adding to that so we had competition for places and when we need something different I have got something to call on.”
