The Spanish goalkeeper ends his 12-year spell at Old Trafford.
David de Gea has confirmed his departure from Manchester United as a free agent.
The Red Devils came close to extending De Gea’s contract last season but eventually decided to sign a new keeper. Having become a free agent last week, the 32-year-old announced his Man Utd exit on Saturday.
“I would like to express my unwavering gratitude and appreciation for the love from the last 12 years,” De Gea’s farewell message on Twitter reads.
“We’ve achieved a lot since my dear Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club. I took incredible pride everytime I pulled on this shirt, to lead the team, to represent this institution, the biggest club in the world was an honour only bestows upon a few lucky footballers.”
De Ga made 545 appearances for the Red Devils during his 12 years at the club, keeping 190 clean sheets. The former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper won the Premier League’s Golden Glove for the second time in his career last season, helping the Red Devils return to the Champions League.
He added: “It’s been an unforgettable and successful period since I came here. I didn’t think from leaving Madrid as a young boy we would achieve what we did together.”
Man Utd have intensified their efforts to sign a replacement for De Gea in recent days.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the club are “really close” to completing a move for Inter’s Andre Onana. The Sky Sports journalist claims United expect the Serie A giants to accept their third bid for the Cameroonian keeper next week.
