As part of a club restructuring, Manchester United have appointed former midfielder Darren Fletcher with a major role.

Manchester United have appointed former midfielder Darren Fletcher as their first-ever technical director in a major restructuring at the club.

Elsewhere, John Murtough has been promoted to the role of football director.

The Premier League giants have announced a significant restructure behind the scenes, with the two new roles introduced in a move to ‘strengthen their football operations’.

For Fletcher, he is expected to focus on long-term player and squad development and maintain a link between the academy and the first-team.

The club have also made it clear Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will remain integral to recruitment.

Executive vice-chairman Woodward said: “These appointments reinforce the progress we have been making.

“We have already made great strides forward in the way we run our football operations, and the benefits are visible in the resurgent pipeline of academy talent reaching the first team and through our improved recruitment record.”

“John has been integral to our progress in these areas and his deep understanding of development ensures the club’s traditions of bringing young players through from academy to first team will continue.”

“This new position is a natural evolution that harnesses his leadership qualities and his years of experience in the game.”
