Peter Crouch has named three reasons why re-signing Romelu Lukaku this summer would be a smart move from Chelsea.
Romelu Lukaku would cost less money than Chelsea’s other striker targets, would be a good fit under Thomas Tuchel, and has a point to prove in London, says Peter Crouch.
The former Liverpool and Tottenham striker believes a reunion for Chelsea and Lukaku could suit both parties, and he has suggested the latter can still take his game to another level.
At the age of 28, Lukaku is in the best form of his career. The striker won Serie A’s MVP award upon firing Inter Milan to a first league title in over a decade. He’s also in contention for the Euro 2020 Golden Boot race, having scored three times in four outings for Belgium so far.
“Romelu Lukaku has to be a target for Premier League clubs, without a doubt,” Crouch told Paddy Power.
“Look at the money you’d have to spend to get Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe or even Harry Kane. It would cost a lot less to get Lukaku, yet he’s a banker for Premier League goals.
“He gets better every season and I wouldn’t bet against him winning the Euros Golden Boot now. Belgium are a top side and he’s going to get more goals.
“The obvious English destination is Chelsea, though. He’d fit in there. They’ve got pace, which suits him, willing runners, and they’d have an abundance of ability around him.
“He’s been at Chelsea before, and I think he’s got something to prove there. I could see him being a good fit under Thomas Tuchel.”
Lukaku previously had a three-year spell as a Chelsea player between 2011 and 2014. The Belgian, though, made just 15 appearances and spent most of his time on loan at West Brom and Everton.
He has also recently announced plans to continue at Inter for next season, prompting Crouch to look at Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.
‘Similarly, if Chelsea sign Erling Haaland, they are title contenders without a doubt,” the ex-Premier League striker added.
“They’ve got a squad capable of a title challenge and will have confidence after winning the Champions League.
“If they get Haaland, they’re 100% in it. It’s going to be a fascinating season to see if anyone can topple Manchester City.”
