CR7’s hopes of a record-equalling five World Cup appearances hang in the balance as Portugal have lost some key players.
Cristiano Ronaldo has vowed ‘to put Portugal in its rightful place’ ahead of a crucial World Cup qualifying playoff match against Turkey.
The Manchester United superstar shared a passionate battle cry on social media as he and his Portugal teammates prepare to face Turkey in Porto on Thursday evening.
After Serbia pipped Portugal to the top spot in Group A, Fernando Santos’ men must win two tricky playoff games to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. Ronaldo and co will need to be at their very best for this run of matches. First up, they must beat Turkey and, if successful, could face a potential play-off against Italy next.

‘We will fight to put Portugal in its rightful place’
In an impassioned Instagram post, Ronaldo sent out a defiant message for the clash against Turkey on Thursday.
“Total focus on World Cup 2022,” the 37-year-old posted.
“Proud as always to represent Portugal. We know the road won’t be easy. We have the utmost respect for the opponents we will face and who share the same goals as us. But, together, we will fight to put Portugal in its rightful place. Let’s do this.”
Portugal lose some key players
But it won’t be easy for Portugal, with some key players absent from the Turkey playoff qualifier.
Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo and Lille midfielder Renato Sanches are suspended.
Cancelo’s Manchester City teammate Ruben Dias is out with a hamstring injury. Wolves midfielder Ruben Dias has had to withdraw with injury, while Porto defender Pepe has tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss out.
