The Portuguese superstar found a flying start to the World Cup as he scored his eighth goal in the tournament.
Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score in five World Cup campaigns by converting a penalty for Portugal against Ghana.
The African giants were holding Portugal to a goalless draw when Mohammed Salisu brought Ronaldo down inside the box.
CR7 then converted the spot kick with a powerful strike into the left-hand side of the net, breaking another all-time record.
The goal also put Ronaldo ahead of his arch-rival Lionel Messi in World Cup’s goalscoring charts. Messi scored a penalty to take his total tally to seven goals, while Ronaldo’s strike was his eighth goal in the tournament.
Since making his debut for Portugal in 2003, Ronaldo has registered 117 goals in his 191 international appearances. The 37-year-old is already the record holder for most international goals.
CR7 also aims to break a national team record from Portugal legend Eusebio. By scoring two more goals at the World Cup, Ronaldo can surpass his countryman to become Portugal’s all-time top-scorer in the tournament.
Having appeared in every World Cup since 2006, Ronaldo hopes to finally claim the trophy with Portugal in Qatar. The Euro 2016 winner compete against Ghana, Uruguay, and South Korea in Group H of the competition.
