Despite losing the biggest prize of the evening, Cristiano Ronaldo still managed to beat Messi in the voting to select FIFA’s The Best Award winner.
Even though Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t able to win FIFA’s The Best Award, it’s no secret he had a far better 2020 than Leo Messi did. With 42 goals and 7 assists in 42 matches throughout the year, only Robert Lewandowski had better stats than he did. Also, Ronaldo won the Italian Serie A for the second straight season since he arrived from Real Madrid.
Messi wasn’t so lucky with his club as he only broke La Liga’s assist record with 21. We previously said why Messi didn’t even deserve to be part of the podium as many Bayern Munich players deserved that spot. However, we all know there’s a clear favor for the Argentine when the voting starts. In his particular rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi didn’t really stand a chance and got the last place on the podium.
Ronaldo votes Messi for The Best Award.
As a gesture of goodwill, it turns out Cristiano Ronaldo decided to vote Leo Messi for The Best Award but Leo didn’t do the same. According to Diario AS, the Portuguese forward voted Lewandowski first, Messi second, and Kylian Mbappe third. Whereas Messi voted Neymar first, Mbappe second, and Lewandowski third. Yet another proof of this rivalry that won’t stop until the fat lady sings.
We also know how terribly Ronaldo can take losing an award, today was no exception. Knowing he probably wouldn’t win the big one, he sat with a camera in front of him waiting for the result. In his face you could feel the disappointment after losing the award to Robert Lewandowski. But next year will be another chance for him to get all the awards once again. Ronaldo never stops.
