Let’s take a look at the player ratings from the Group C FIFA Women’s World Cup match at the FMG Stadium Waikato.
On Monday, Costa Rica and Zambia wrapped up their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaigns. It was effectively a dead-rubber game. Both teams had failed to qualify for the knockout stages, having lost their opening two matches in Group C. Yet, they made sure to go out with a bang, in what proved to be an absorbing encounter in Waikato.
Zambia stormed into a two-goal lead. Lushomo Mweemba volleyed the Copper Queens in front in the third minute of the game. Barbra Banda then coolly slotted in a penalty to double their lead. The captain’s strike was the 1000th goal to be scored in FIFA Women’s World Cup history.
Racheal Kundananji later struck a third goal in the second half to seal Zambia a 3-1 victory. It was their first-ever World Cup win and secured them third place in Group C. Daphne Melissa Herrera Monge did pull one back for Costa Rica, but the Tricolor were powerless in the end and crashed out of the World Cup without a single point.
