Elias Jelert has shared his verdict on Marcus Rashford’s red card and revealed what the Manchester United attacker said to him.

FC Copenhagen defender Elias Jelert said that Marcus Rashford apologized for the challenge on him and believes the Manchester United star’s red card was ‘unfortunate’.

In the 42nd minute of Wednesday’s Champions League game, disaster struck United. They went down to 10 men after Rashford made a late tackle on Jelert. The referee, Donatas Rumsas, reviewed the challenge on the pitchside screen and then showed the forward a straight red card.

“When they checked on VAR, he was there to say sorry. So there was nothing malicious about it,” Jelert revealed to reporters after the match.

Rashford’s sending-off turned the game on its head. United surrendered a two-goal lead and eventually fell to a 4-3 defeat in Denmark.

It wasn’t all good news for Copenhagen though, as Jelert appeared with bandages on his ankle after the final whistle.

“It is after the tackle at the red card, which I also think is unfortunate,” the 20-year-old said.

“He [Rashford] just tries to screen, but I get hit high and wiggle my ankle violently. Now that it has cooled, I can feel it is stiff and swollen.”

United now sit bottom of Group A in the Champions League, with three points from three games.

Erik ten Hag’s side will try to turn things around on Saturday when they play host to Luton Town in the Premier League.
