The Gunners will have a new captain after Alexandre Lacazette’s departure earlier this summer.

Arsenal have confirmed Martin Odegaard as their new captain ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.

Alexandre Lacazette became the Gunners’ captain after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s departure last winter.

Following the Frenchman’s summer move to Lyon, Odegaard has received the armband despite his relatively short spell at the Emirates.

Speaking to TV2 about his new role, the Arsenal midfielder said: “It’s big, of course. But it does not change much. I feel like I’m doing the same things.

“There are more people around who think about it. But it is a great recognition and a great declaration of trust. I take that as a big compliment, but beyond that, I do the same as always.”

Odegaard established himself as a crucial player in Arsenal’s midfield after his initial loan move from Real Madrid in January 2021.

The club went on to sign the Norwegian playmaker on a permanent deal last August. Odegaard scored seven goals and provided four assists in his 36 league appearances last season, developing into a regular starter in Arteta’s lineup.

Another candidate to take on Arsenal’s captaincy was Kieran Tierney. However, it seems his injury records have convinced Arteta to pick a more reliable option as his side’s next captain.
