Cole Palmer’s meteoric rise in the football world is a story that will be told for years. Two years ago, few outside of Manchester City’s Academy were familiar with his name.

Those who did know him likely viewed him as just another talented youngster given a few minutes on the pitch by Pep Guardiola after City had already secured victory. Fast forward to today, and Palmer is a Premier League sensation, a PFA award winner, a Ballon d’Or nominee, and one of the most talked-about players in the world. But how did this once-overlooked talent transform into a Chelsea superstar in just a single season?

Early Beginnings

Cole Palmer was born and raised in Manchester, but, interestingly, he didn’t grow up supporting City. Like many kids in the early 2000s, Palmer was a Manchester United fan. However, when it came time to pursue his football career, he chose the blue half of Manchester, joining City’s academy at the age of eight.

Football ran in his family. His father, who played Sunday League football, would take young Cole along to watch, undoubtedly nurturing his son’s passion for the sport. From an early age, Palmer showed immense talent, but his progress wasn’t without challenges.

A Rocky Start

Despite his natural ability, Palmer faced significant doubts within the Manchester City Academy, especially as he approached his teenage years. At 14, coaches doubted whether he was physically big enough for professional football. Even by the time he was 16, they were still unsure if he would make it. The academy considered releasing him, but then-Academy director Jason Wilcox, now Manchester United’s technical director, insisted on giving Palmer more time.

While players like Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho were making their first-team debuts as teenagers, Palmer’s opportunity didn’t come until he was 20. His first senior appearance for City came in a Carabao Cup match against Burnley in September 2020, followed by his first goal for the club a year later in the same competition against Wycombe.

Establishing Himself at Manchester City

The 2021-22 season marked the beginning of Palmer’s breakthrough. He made his Premier League debut in August 2021 and scored his first senior goal in September. That October, he showcased his remarkable talent by playing for the first team in a Premier League match against Burnley and later that evening, scoring a hat-trick for City’s under-23s.

Just days later, Palmer came off the bench in the Champions League and marked his second appearance with a goal. Despite these standout moments, his role remained limited. Pep Guardiola used Palmer sparingly, often throwing him into various positions on the pitch—from winger to central midfielder—without a clear sense of his best fit.

A Decisive Move

Palmer’s fortunes changed in the 2023-24 season. He had been a part of City’s treble-winning squad but was still not a regular starter. His frustration grew, and after scoring in both the Community Shield against Arsenal and the UEFA Super Cup final against Sevilla, Palmer made his intentions clear. He wanted more playing time, or he was prepared to leave.

Guardiola offered no promises of more minutes, forcing Palmer to make a difficult decision. Despite his lifelong connection to City, he chose to leave permanently, and Chelsea came knocking with a £40 million offer.

Chelsea: A New Beginning

Initially, fans and pundits questioned Chelsea’s decision to spend such a large sum on an unproven player. But Palmer wasted little time in showing why the Blues had invested in him.

Though he didn’t immediately light up the Premier League, Palmer’s breakthrough came in his fifth appearance, scoring from the penalty spot against Burnley. His performance gained momentum when he scored again, this time against Arsenal, and further solidified his place with a goal and assist in a commanding 4-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. By the time Chelsea faced Manchester City, Palmer was firmly established as a key player, scoring a late equalizer from the spot against his former club.

His talent for taking penalties under pressure, combined with his growing influence on the pitch, showed Palmer was more than just a young prospect—he was Chelsea’s rising star.

The Breakout Season

As the season progressed, Palmer only grew stronger. He scored his first Premier League goal from open play against Manchester United, followed by another goal and assist against Sheffield United. His breakout moment came in late December, when he scored a brace and provided an assist in a 4-0 victory over Luton Town, a performance that earned him a nomination for Goal of the Month.

By the end of his first season at Chelsea, Palmer had 22 goals and 11 assists across all competitions. He became the third Chelsea player to score 20+ goals in his debut season, cementing himself as an irreplaceable asset. His remarkable performances earned him the Premier League Young Player of the Season, PFA Young Player of the Year, and PFA Fans’ Player of the Year awards. He was also named Chelsea’s Player of the Season.

Cementing His Legacy

Despite doubts about whether Palmer could maintain his form, he started the 2024-25 season even more impressively than the last. His August performances, including a stunning goal against Wolves, saw him become the first player in Premier League history to win back-to-back Goal of the Month awards. He continued to break records, including a four-goal haul against Brighton, making him the first player in Premier League history to score four goals in the first half of a game.

Cole Palmer has quickly gone from being Manchester City’s underused talent to Chelsea’s undisputed superstar. His rapid rise, combined with his confidence and ability to perform under pressure, suggests that this is only the beginning for him. As he continues to break records and earn accolades, the football world watches eagerly to see just how far this once-overlooked Academy player can go.
