Ben Chilwell suggests Ashley Cole was one of his childhood heroes and he is now keen on following in the footsteps of the Chelsea legend.

A prolonged transfer saga finally came to an end on Wednesday when Ben Chilwell put pen to paper on a five-year contract with Chelsea to complete his €50 million move.

The former Leicester City man became Frank Lampard’s third major signing of this summer after Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.

He will be expected to provide stability at left-back, a position that was a cause of much concern for Lampard throughout the last season.

Ashley Cole, arguably the Blues’ finest-ever left-back, previously heaped praise on the England international while backing him to succeed at Stamford Bridge.

And Chilwell aims to replicate the successful career of Cole, who led Chelsea to eight major titles, including Champions League, Europa League, and Premier League.

“It’s great for myself, I’ve got that benchmark of what a great Chelsea left-back is,” he told the club’s official website.

“I grew up watching Ashley Cole play so I know how respected he is here and again that was a big reason for me wanting to come.

“I feel like I’m still young and I want that sort of career that he had at Chelsea for myself as well.”
