The Blues will have to play without their main striker for the first few weeks of 2024.
Nicolas Jackson, has emerged as a linchpin of Mauricio Pochettino’s lineup at Chelsea this season, maintaining his position regardless of the team’s goal-scoring form. Pochettino has repeatedly defended the 22-year-old in the face of criticism, underscoring his pivotal role in the squad.
However, Chelsea will face a significant challenge in the new year as the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) approaches, compelling the departure of key players representing their respective nations. Jackson, set to don the colors of Senegal, enters the tournament as a favorite to clinch victory alongside former Blues Kalidou Koulibaly and Edouard Mendy, who will represent Senegal.
The looming AFCON stint could see Jackson absent from up to eight crucial fixtures if Senegal progresses deep into the competition. Among these are pivotal cup ties, including the two-legged League Cup semi-final against Middlesbrough and the FA Cup Third Round clash against Preston North End.
In the Premier League, Chelsea will be without Jackson for the West London derby against Fulham and the challenging trip to Anfield at the end of January. If Senegal continues to thrive, additional league matches against Wolves and Crystal Palace in February may also witness Jackson’s absence.
