The Blues might have brought in a replacement for the error-prone Spaniard but getting him off the books could be very complicated.

Kepa Arrizabala’s huge price tag and high wage bill are likely to pose problems when Chelsea attempts to offload him in January, according to Robert Green.

The error-prone Spaniard struggled for form over the past year and was finally dropped from Frank Lampard’s starting XI this season.

Edouard Mendy is the one to replace the world’s most expensive shot-stopper who arrived at Stamford Bridge for €80 million back in 2018.

Mendy has been exceptional between the sticks, and Kepa is reportedly no longer in Lampard’s long-term plans for the club.

The Blues may look to cash in on their record signing when the transfer market opens but a former club custodian believes the club is in a tricky situation with Kepa.

“It’s a tough sell. It’s a numbers thing,” Green told The Athletic. “Chelsea and [their director] Marina Granovskaia are not in the business of losing money.

“They have an asset which is depreciating greatly but with football clubs in the financial state they’re in, it’s going to be tough to put something together.

“I’m not even talking just about selling, even a loan is going to be a struggle.

“The transfer fee and the wages [believed to be around £170,000 a week] is the biggest obstacle to resolving the situation.”
