The Blues boss says his side ‘stopped defending’ against their Premier League opponents.

Chelsea suffered a surprise 4-1 defeat against Brentford on Saturday. The Blues went ahead through Antonio Rudiger’s opener at the beginning of the second half. However, the visitors managed to come back from behind with four goals, three of which were scored in ten minutes.

It was Brentford’s first win over Chelsea since 1939 as the Bees climbed up to 14th place on the table. On the other hand, the Blues now see their third spot in danger as Arsenal sit behind them with five points less and a game at hand.

“Nobody saw it coming,” Tuchel said post-match. “Especially after going 1-0 ahead. It was very untypical of us. But we stopped defending. We were not aware of enough of the danger, were sloppy with the defending and got punished.

“They made the most of it in those 10 minutes. Right after their third goal we had 10 minutes where we had big, big chances and we missed them.

“They were lucky and clinical enough to get three goals. We did not defend like it is needed to in the Premier League and got punished.”

Chelsea will now prepare to face Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie on Wednesday.
