The Spaniard has triggered a clause in his contract that will prevent his contract from expiring this summer.
Chelsea are facing uncertainty over how their backline will look like next season. Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen are spending the last months of their contract, while Barcelona are pushing to secure a deal for Cesar Azpilicueta.
The Spanish defender was also going to become a free agent in the summer. However, he has made enough appearances that will automatically renew his contract for another year.
With Barcelona offering Azpilicueta a more lucrative contract, the 32-year-old’s future is still uncertain. However, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is confident the Spaniard will stay at Stamford Bridge.
“I knew it was going to happen, because I knew the amount of games before it was going to happen,” the German said of the contract extension.
“It was so close. It’s a good thing, we were aware of it. It’s good news for us. We have a contract, he’s our captain, it’s a very high probability he will stay.”
He added: “I knew all the time that this is very likely to happen because he is a regular starter with us. I knew the number of games we needed to make him stay, to ensure his contract continued or extended.
“That’s why I am very happy. You know how much I rely on him and how much impact he has in this group and this club. It’s very good news for us.”
