The Chelsea defender is spending the last months of his current deal, with no signs of a renewal being imminent.

Antonio Rudiger scored Chelsea’s only goal in their 1-0 win over Tottenham on Wednesday. Another brilliant performance by the German defender once again highlighted his complicated contract situation at Chelsea.

Rudiger is spending the final six months of his Chelsea deal while several clubs are eyeing summer moves for him. However, his countryman and manager, Thomas Tuchel, believes he will eventually end up staying at Stamford Bridge.

In a post-match interview after his side’s victory in the Carabao Cup semi-finals, Tuchel spoke about Rudiger’s contract situation.

Asked whether Rudiger will stay at the club, the former Paris Saint-Germain manager responded (via Mirror): “Everybody knows but there’s a lot of ‘if’ in your question. Let’s wait to see what becomes the reality.

Asked if he is confident they can tie down Rudiger to a long-term deal.”

He added: “Of course we are confident. We have things to offer and he is the player he is in a Chelsea shirt and in a Chelsea environment. I think he knows it very well.”

A new developemet in negotiations

On Thursday, Bild reported a recent breakthrough in contract talks has persuaded Rudiger to stay at Chelsea. The German outlet claims the negotiations have made significant progress lately.

In case of a Chelsea exit, Real Madrid are reportedly the favourites to sign Rudiger. However, PSG and Bayern Munich are also closely following the defender’s situation.

After the Tottenham game, Rudiger admitted his time at Chelsea has been the best phase of his career.

He said: “I’m enjoying it. You have to see it in chapters. I enjoy this chapter. So far yeah it’s the best part of my career. As you said there are a lot of games and the schedule is getting busier and busier.”
