The England international could leave Chelsea as soon as this summer.
Chelsea should intensify their efforts to tie down Mason Mount to a new contract, according to Gary Cahill.
Mount is a few months away from entering the final 12 months of his Chelsea contract. The club could consider selling him next summer in a bid to avoid a free departure.
However, Cahill believes the homegrown star’s qualities should be enough to earn him a contract renewal.
“I’m a massive fan of his, I think he’s brilliant,” the former Chelsea star told 90min.
“I think he’s got energy, enthusiasm, he knows what it’s what it takes to play for Chelsea, and what it means to play for Chelsea
“I’m a big fan of him. I don’t buy the the fact that [he’s not playing] because of form. Name me a player who’s played unbelievable every game – it doesn’t happen. You have dips and then you come back, good players always come back you have debts involved and then you come back and go play has always come back. So yeah I don’t buy that.”
Earlier this month, reports emerged in English media of Mount’s “outlandish” salary demands during his negotiations with Chelsea. On the other hand, Thomas Tuchel’s appointment at Bayern Munich have intensified reports about Mount’s possible move to Allianz Arena to reunite with his former manager.
Cahill added: “I’m sure the club have their own plans, but for me it seems like a simple one to do [to give Mount a new contract]. But that’s me talking as a fan looking from the outside in. I think he was all the [desired] attributes when you look at his age, he’s in the England squad, and he’s only going to get better and he’s already at a top level. So I think it’s a simple one to do.”
