The Blues’ excellent form has caught the interest of Klopp, who recently branded them as ‘favorites’ for the Premier League.

Mario Melchiot dismissed Jurgen Klopp tipping Chelsea as Premier League title favorites as nothing more than a ‘clever’ attempt to ease the pressure off Liverpool.

The Blues’ summer signings have begun to make their mark, having recently helped the club enjoy a 14-match unbeaten run. It’s prompted hope of a first league title since the 2016/17 campaign.

After Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Everton, however, Frank Lampard was keen to point out Chelsea are still a work in progress and dismissed Klopp’s ‘ridiculous’ theory that his side had become the team to beat.

Now Lampard’s former teammate Melchiot has added his own thoughts on Klopp’s remarks.

“I don’t think so,” the ex-defender told Stadium Astro on Chelsea’s title prospects.

“I would love to say it. But if you look at Liverpool, they have the ingredients to win it again. I see them being up there to win it again, along with Manchester City.

“Do Chelsea want to be up there? Of course, but these [a 1-0 defeat at Everton] are the kind of games they have to win if they are going to compete.

“Do I expect them to be in [the] top four? Yes, that’s normal – especially with the investment they have made and bringing so many talented players into the squad.

“But the important part is to take a bit of pressure off your team by saying others are great, so that’s clever from Klopp.”
